Investigation of physiological and biochemical responses of two strawberry cultivars to cold stress

Authors

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to investigate the importance of some physiological and biochemical properties related to cold adaptation mechanisms. We aimed to adopt properand efficient indices for identification of winter cold tolerance and susceptibilityin two strawberry cultivars. Differentphysiological and biochemical traits were studied under different cold treatments on the leaf and crown tissues of two strawberry cultivars of Selva and Queen Elisa. Plants prepared from new runners after being planted in the pot and grown until late November. Potted plantswere kept in out doorcondition to gradually adapt to low temperature. After plant adaptation, coldtreatments were artificially applied with adjustable chilling apparatus. The samples were kept under the final cold treatment for three hours and then removed from the apparatus and transferred to the laboratory for measurement of different traits. Factorial experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design. The results showed that the levels of oxidative enzymes including superoxide dismutase, guaiacol peroxidase and catalase were significantly affected by cultivar, texture and temperature changes. Also, with decrease in temperature, the ion leakage rate, proline, protein, hydrogen peroxide, membrane lipid and carbohydrate peroxidation increased and these values were generally higher in Queen Elisa cultivar than in Selva. Increasing levels of these factors were more evident in the process of lowering temperature in the crown tissue. The leaf relative water content also decreased with decreasing temperature, which overall confirms the tolerance to cold Queen Elisa cultivar.

Biochemical and Physiological Responses of Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) Cultivars to Osmotic Stress

In order to investigate the effects of water stress on total phenolics content, antioxidant power, β-glucosidase activity and stomatal properties of alfalfa, a factorial experiment based on randomized complete block design was carried out in 1-Lit pots containing half strength Hoagland culture medium using two cultivars of alfalfa at four osmotic pressures including 0 (control), -0.5, -1.0 and ...

Morphological and physiological responses of two common bean cultivars to drought stress

Drought stress is the major problem in arid and semi-arid regions of the world. Investigating the response of different cultivars of crop plants to drought stress can help to select the tolerant ones for agriculture in arid lands. In this study, a greenhouse experiment was conducted as a factorial experiment based on completely randomized design with two common bean cultivars (Phaseolus vulgari...

Effect of cold stress on biochemical and physiological characteristics in the number of olive cultivars

This study was conducted to investigate the frost status in the 11 commercial cultivars, three newly introduced cultivars and two genotypes of olives. After the occurrence of frost at the Tarom region of Zanjan province in February 2019, three trees from each cultivar were selected. Frost symptoms were recorded based on observational indices. Gas exchange traits (stomatal conductance, transpira...

Physiological responses of two tomato (Lycopersicun esculentum M.) cultivars to Azomite fertilizer under drought stress.

This study was conducted in order to investigate the effect of drought stress and Azomite fertilizer on some physiological traits of two tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum M.) cultivars (izmir and Izabella). A randomized complete design with factorial arrangement with three replications was used. Treatments consisted of three levels of irrigation including FC (control), FC (mild drought stress), a...
